August 2010 Kids' Month: WC4 Children's Program Inspires Young Deltiologists

August 2010 -  Our WC4 Kids!

Almost since 1972, the Washington Crossing Card Collectors Club (WC4) has been encouraging our children to become collectors of postcards by holding a summer program dedicated to the interests of the children and their postcards. The event changes from year to year, as the children grow and mature. According to Betty Davis, WC4's newsletter editor and projectionist, some years the children have actually planned and carried out all the activities of the entire evening, from start to finish, with guidance from more senior members. Other years, the events have been much simpler. It really depends on the age of the children and the motivation of the members, both the junior and senior ones!

This year, Washington Crossing's children's program was led by senior member, Dennis Lebofsky, a former professor at Temple University in Philadelphia and a regular winner of our famous Stan's Contest, held monthly at our club meetings. A competitive sort, Lebofsky asked each child to engage in a competition to create the most interesting hand-made postcard from scratch and present it to the audience at the August meeting. When it was all done and said, each child walked away with a prize, the theory being that all WC4 kids are winners - for one reason or another! Other postcard activities created by Lebofsky for the evening were several contests:  a postcard "Concentration" game, a "Lucky Liberty Bell" postcard game, and a treasure hunt. Appropriate postcard-related prizes including notebooks, UltraPro pages, and postcard sleeves were also given out, along with candy, pencils, pens, and other valuable kid's stuff!
The objectives of WC4's children's programs are to educate the children about the hobby, known as deltiology, and to inspire the children to become collectors, if they aren't already.  WC4 hopes that some day these same children will become official WC4 members and leaders, and continue in their parents' and grandparents' footsteps to preserve the history and heritage of the club and propel it forward. According to Peter Brown, WC4's current president, "Kid's Month is always a successful event and lots of fun.....if you like kids!"

Listed below are the winners from the August 2010 Kids' Contest. We hope you like them!
Many thanks to Dennis Lebofsky for organizing and leading this year's August children's program. It was very successful and proves the theory that..... one person can make a difference! Thanks Dennis!!
